The Pedra de Lume salt flats are one of the most emblematic attractions of Sal island, Cape Verde. Located on the island's east coast, in the village of Pedra de Lume, these salt flats lie in the crater of an extinct volcano, about 39 metres below sea level. This unique setting gives the salt flats a surreal landscape and the chance to float in the salty water, much like in the Dead Sea.
History and importance
Salt extraction at Pedra de Lume dates back to the 18th century and was one of the island's main sources of income for many years. Production was stepped up in the early 20th century with infrastructure such as a funicular and a cable car to carry the salt to the port. Today the salt flats are used mainly for tourism and therapeutic purposes.
A unique experience
One of the main attractions of the Pedra de Lume salt flats is the chance to float in the crater's salty water. Thanks to the high salt concentration, you float effortlessly — a relaxing, therapeutic experience. Spending only a few minutes in the water is recommended because of its intense salinity. The surrounding area also offers stunning panoramic views, ideal for walks and taking in the lunar landscape.
Access and practical information
The Pedra de Lume salt flats are about 5 km east of the town of Espargos and are easy to reach by road. There is an entrance fee, and visitors will find basic facilities such as changing rooms and a small café. Bring swimwear, sunscreen and suitable shoes for walking around the salt flats.
The Pedra de Lume salt flats offer a unique experience that combines history, nature and well-being. Visiting is a chance to discover one of the most authentic and fascinating sides of Sal island.
