Espargos – The heart of Sal island

Located at the geographical centre of Sal island, Espargos is the island's administrative and urban capital, playing a vital role in daily life and local economic development. Although it has no direct access to the sea, the town is just minutes from the main tourist areas and Amílcar Cabral International Airport, making it an essential link for anyone visiting the archipelago.

The name "Espargos" comes from a native plant known as wild asparagus (Asparagus africanus), which grew abundantly in the area before it was built up. The town began to develop in a more structured way in the 1940s with the construction of the airport, which drove economic growth, internal migration and the modernisation of the area.

Today Espargos is the island's administrative, commercial and political centre, home to government institutions, schools, banks, health centres and a range of essential services. The urban environment is simple but functional, reflecting the calm, welcoming pace of life that characterises Sal.

Although less touristy than Santa Maria, Espargos offers a more authentic, local experience. Visitors can explore the traditional markets, taste Cape Verdean food in small family restaurants, chat with residents and discover the real island culture.

One of the town's highlights is the Zona Alta viewpoint, which offers an amazing panoramic view over the whole island, including the desert, the sea and the surrounding neighbourhoods. Street-art murals are also common, depicting themes linked to Cape Verdean culture, music and identity.

Espargos is therefore much more than a place to pass through: it is the cultural and social pulse of Sal, where tradition and modernity meet in the daily lives of those who live and work on the island.
